Tiny Cumin Seeds
[Jesus teaching] “’Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you tithe mint and dill and cummin and have neglected the weightier provisions of the law: justice and mercy and faithfulness; but these are the things you should have done without neglecting the others.
“You blind guides who strain out a gnat and swallow a camel! Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you clean the outside of the cup and of the dish, but inside they are full of robbery and self-indulgence.
“’You blind Pharisees, first clean the inside of the cup and of the dish, so that the inside of the cup and of the dish, so that the outside of it may become clean also.’” Matthew 23:23
Cumin was a relatively inexpensive spice that was sprinkled on bread and cheese and used as a seasoning for meat. Here Jesus is teaching, as He often did, about outward actions and inward motivation.
Although it may be possible to obey the details of a law, if the motivation is self-focused (so others know you are a ‘good’ person) this is disobedience. God is focused on our hearts and how we manage justice, mercy and faithfulness to those around us, starting with our family.
Take care with love, especially His, from Darlene, who still prays for you each day.
