Harkening Back

“And the rabble who were among them had greedy desires; and also the sons of Israel wept again and said, ‘Who will give us meat to eat?  We remember the fish which we used to eat free in Egypt, the cucumbers and the melons and the leeks and the onions and the garlic, but now our appetite is gone.  There is nothing at all to look at except this manna.’

“Now the manna was like coriander seed, and its appearance was like that of bdellium.  The people would go about and gather it and grind it between two millstones or heat it in the mortar, and boil it in the pot and make cakes with it; and its taste was the taste of cakes baked with oil.  And when the dew fell on the camp at night, the namma would fall with it.”  Numbers 11:2-9

Have you ever found yourself thinking about ‘the way it used to be’?  Most times we do this when things have turned difficult and we latch on to the memory of a more enjoyable past.  However, let me suggest to reverse that thinking, by considering the benefits of past hardships and how they have resulted in a stronger you today.

In the front of my Bible, I wrote a little phrase I heard someone say once that certainly changed my perspective about slogging through troubled times and I share it with you as a gift:

‘Stop harkening back to what once was,

because God is making

something new for you today.’

Romans chapter 5
