Humility
“The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God. As it is written in Isaiah the prophet: ‘Behold I send My messenger ahead of You, who will prepare Your way; the voice of one crying in the wilderness, make ready the way of the Lord, make His paths straight.’’
“John the Baptist appeared in the wilderness preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. And all the country of Judea was going out to him, and all the people of Jerusalem; and they were being baptised by him in the Jordan River, confessing their sins.
“John was clothed with camel’s hair and wore a leather belt around his waist, and his diet was locusts and wild honey. And he was preaching, and saying, ‘After me One is coming who is mightier than I, and I am not fit to stoop down and untie the thong of His sandals. I baptise you with water; but He will baptise you with the Holy Spirit.’” Mark 1:1-8
John appeared like a typical prophet in Scripture. His clothing was very basic and he ate the unremarkable food of locusts and bees’ honey. Although, locusts were regarded as ‘clean’ animals and therefore were alright to eat, they, like honey, were freely provided by God.
Why locusts? None of the commentaries gave me more information beyond their habit of destroying crops and bringing famine. Perhaps, the locust, as his food was another way of displaying his utter dependence on his heavenly Father. It also made him stand out from other religious leaders and the people at the time giving impact to his selfless message.
Perhaps it can remind us that life is not about indulgences and luxury or even comfort -- but how holy, holiness is and how sinful, sin is.

NOTE: I choose to believe the Bible because it's a reliable collection of historical documents written down by eyewitnesses during the lifetime of other eyewitnesses. They reported supernatural events that took place before, of specific prophecies; and claim that their writings are divine rather than human in origin.
