[Moses speaking] “’Because you did not serve the Lord your God with joy and a glad heart, for the abundance of all things; therefore you shall serve your enemies whom the Lord will send against you, in hunger, in thirst, in nakedness, and in the lack of all things; and He will put an iron yoke on your neck until He has destroyed you.
“’The Lord will bring a nation against you from afar, from the end of the earth, as the eagle swoops down, a nation whose language you shall not understand, a nation of fierce countenance who will have no respect for the old, nor show favour to the young.
“’Moreover, it shall eat the offspring of your heard and the produce of your ground until you are destroyed, who also leaves you no grain, new wine, or oil, nor the increase of your herd or the young of your flock until they have caused you to perish.
It shall besiege you in all your towns until your high and fortified walls in which you trusted come down throughout your land, and it shall besiege you in all your towns throughout your land which the Lord your God has given you.
“Then you shall eat the offspring of your own body, the flesh of your sons and of your daughters whom the Lord your God has given you, during the siege and the distress by which your enemy will oppress you.” Deuteronomy 28:47-53
It is easy to ‘personify’ God into a kind and soft-hearted, ‘heavenly grandpa’-sort of character who sails around on fluffy clouds watching over His flocks of mischievous children and smiling.
Although He is compassionate, He also has limits. In the horrible curse, Moses shared from God to His people, there was a disgusting horror mentioned for God’s people who repeatedly disobeyed Him.
Although, it is unthinkable that anyone would eat their children from hunger, the dramatic picture it paints is for us all to learn from.
God is not messing around with this world. Sin is sin -- whether it is a little sin such as pride or envy or a tiny white lie or a sin as horrific as consuming the flesh of another human being.
The ONLY way to escape eternal punishment for our willful and careless sin choices is to reach out to Jesus Christ and confess our need of Him and trust in His forgiving, gracious mercy and justice.
“For whoever keeps the whole law and yet stumbles in one point, he has become guilty of all.” James 2:10

NOTE: I choose to believe the Bible because it's a reliable collection of historical documents written down by eyewitnesses during the lifetime of other eyewitnesses. They reported supernatural events that took place before, of specific prophecies; and claim that their writings are divine rather than human in origin.
