Dates, Raisins and Bread
“So they brought in the ark of the Lord and set it in its place inside the tent which David had pitched for it; and David offered burnt offerings and peace offerings before the Lord.
“And when David had finished offering the burnt offering and the peace offering, he blessed the people in the name of the Lord of hosts.
“Further, he distributed to all the people, to all the multitude of Israel, both to men and women, a cake of bread and one of the dates and one of raisins to each one. Then all the people departed each to his house.” II Samuel 6:17-19
Grasping the significance of this scene is difficult for most of us. After David defeated the enemies and captured Jerusalem, his next goal was to return the Ark of the Covenant.
The Ark represented the presence of God dwelling among His people in a special way (Exodus 25:22). But God’s Ark had been taken from the tabernacle 100 long years before after it was stolen by conquerors of the nation.
As a procession took place to bring the precious symbol into Jerusalem, David led an enthusiastic celebration into the city to welcome the Ark home. And after the parade, the celebration continued, David gave gifts to all the people so they would remember the day.
Symbols that remind you of your commitment to Christ or a Spiritual milestone (writing your Spiritual birthday in your Bible, or noting in your notebook or diary significant insights, or wearing a piece of jewellery that symbolises an event) can be a helpful reminder to encourage you to keep walking through challenging times, because He never fails you.
