Staples, Like Beans
“Now when David had come to Mahanaim, Shobi, the son of Nahash from Rabbah of the sons of Ammon, Machir the son of Ammiel from Lo-debar, and Barzillai the Gileadite from Rogelim, brought beds, basins,
“pottery, wheat, barley, flour, parched grain, beans, lentils, parched seeds, honey, curds, sheep, and cheese of the herd, for David and for the people who were with him, to eat; for they said, ‘The people are hungry and weary and thirsty in the wilderness.’” II Samuel 17:27-29
David’s story was like all our lives, filled with many ups and downs. After God made a special covenant with him, Israel finally had peace. Then David caved into temptation and committed murder.
After this he was forced on the run from his son, Absalom who wanted to seize the throne from his father, David. David was forced to go on the run and the choice of foods mentioned was meant to sustain him and his troops.
After God restored David, he gave into pride. It reminds us that no one can live a life pleasing to God. This the reason we must accept the gift of God’s gracious payment for our sin by the death and resurrection of His precious Son, Jesus, our Saviour and Sustainer.
