Selective Remembering
“And the rabble who were among them had greedy desires; and also the sons of Israel wept again and said, ‘Who will give us meat to eat? We remember the fish which we used to eat free in Egypt, the cucumbers and the melons and the leeks and the onions and the garlic, but now our appetite is gone. There is nothing at all to look at except this Manna.’” Numbers 11:5
We all indulge in, what is called, selective remembering. It’s when we use our imagination to remember some, but not all, the details of a past situation or event.
Sometimes it is because there were too many other emotions swirling around us at the time to remember accurately what was happening. Times of disappointment and dreadful happenings – loss, pain, tragedy, confusion; times of joy and delight – even times of boring, ordinary mundaneness.
Like a mother who births a child in searing pain, those memories fade into the moment and what remains is ‘selective memory’. The Israelites were no different and longed for what had been because now their lives seemed difficult. Yet, God was calling them to stop harkening back to what once was, so they could be made new…the journey we are also on.
“And in the same way the Spirit also helps our weakness; for we do not know how to pray as we should, but the Spirit Himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words; and He who searches the hearts knows what the mind of the Spirit is, because He intercedes for the saints according to the will of God. And we know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose.” Romans 8:26-28

NOTE: I choose to believe the Bible because it's a reliable collection of historical documents written down by eyewitnesses during the lifetime of other eyewitnesses. They reported supernatural events that took place before, of specific prophecies; and claim that their writings are divine rather than human in origin.
